Los Angeles, California – In a world of automotive advertising, where clichés often dominate, Director Damien Blue emerges as a maverick, defying conventions and pushing boundaries. His latest project, “Collapsing Sky,” a commercial for iconic car brand Alfa Romeo, takes viewers on a breathtaking expedition through art, passion, and the allure of the open road. In an exclusive interview, Damien invites us into his visionary world, shedding light on the creation of this mesmerizing commercial.

“I wanted to capture the metaphor that when you’re behind the wheel of an Alfa, you’re driving a work of art,” Damien explains, his voice laced with intrigue and excitement. “Alfa Romeo embodies the spirit of the explorer archetype, a seeker of experiences and the embodiment of curiosity. ‘Collapsing Sky’ was an opportunity to delve into that realm and bring it to life on screen.”

With his untamed hair and eyes darting, Damien’s passion for his craft is palpable. As he recalls the project’s genesis, he shares, “The inspiration struck while pursuing a creative deck. The concept emerged— an eclectic loft transformed into an art studio, adorned with protagonist Will’s own paintings. It was a moment of serendipity when we stumbled upon this hidden gem of an art studio in Mar Vista. The space, owned by a talented painter, became the canvas for our vision.”

When discussing the challenges faced during location selection, Damien’s voice takes on a determined tone. “We scouted relentlessly, searching for the perfect backdrop to capture the essence of Alfa Romeo. We found it in Malibu, on those winding roads that epitomize the spirit of adventure. Mother Nature graced us with an overcast, foggy day, transforming the surroundings into an otherworldly tropical destination. It was pure magic.”

Recalling the collaboration with his actors and crew, Damien becomes animated with admiration. “Working with Will was an absolute pleasure. We share a connection, a mutual understanding that transcends words. His prowess as a painter lent authenticity to his character, adapting his painting style to suit the role flawlessly. And Rachelle… wow. Her ability to embody seduction and mystery was captivating. She elevated the film to new heights with her improvisation skills and innate understanding of the character.”

As the conversation turns to the rewards and challenges encountered during the shoot, Damien’s voice takes on a reflective tone. “One of the most rewarding moments was capturing a meticulously planned shot with rigged paintbrushes on a wooden cross. It was a true testament to resourcefulness and craftsmanship. Despite the initial challenges, the shot came together beautifully, adding an element of movie magic.”

A glimmer of excitement returns as he recounts the rolling car footage. “We had a skeletal crew, but with the masterful and collaborative expertise of cinematographers Mack Fisher and Mason Pendergast, we captured some breathtaking visuals. Using a mix of dolly, handheld, and a flight head arm, we achieved shots that were awe-inspiring.”

Delving into the world of post-production, Damien focuses on the artists attention to detail. “I collaborated closely with people at the top of their game to refine the final product. Matt Osborne, senior colorist at Company 3, took on the color phase. Colton Jackson, the sound designer and mixer, added an explosive element to the visuals. We wanted to infuse the commercial with an organic feel, using physical objects instead of relying solely on post-production effects. The seamless cut between a falling paintbrush and the key fob falling was a moment of creative brilliance. It’s all about those little details that make a lasting impact.”

As the interview nears its end, Damien Blue leaves us with a tantalizing hint of what the future holds. “My heart lies in capturing the essence of exploration, whether it’s through film, photography, or any other medium. I’m already brewing new ideas, collaborating with other creatives who share the same vision. Stay tuned; there’s a lot more to come.”

With his unique vision and unyielding dedication, Damien Blue has etched his name as a cinematic explorer, revealing the soul of Alfa Romeo through the lens of his camera. “Collapsing Sky” stands as a testament to his artistry, a spec commercial that ignites a desire to embark on our own voyages of discovery.

In a world cluttered with commercial noise, Damien Blue’s work resonates as a beacon of authenticity and inspiration. And just like the explorers of old, he invites us to join him on a journey where dreams are made reality, and the spirit of adventure thrives.
